The crowd roars as a geyser of light erupts from the side of the screen crowning a victor of the match.

The video game club held a Super Smash Bros Brawl tournament on October 4th and over 30 people participated.

Video Game Club is a new club at Piedmont High where students play multiplayer games with their friends.

The club was founded by juniors Mallory Strout and Amy Shapiro and holds regular meetings every Friday at lunch in room 38.

The club members are from every grade in Piedmont High.

Shapiro said the point of the club is to get to play video games at school.

The next tournament will be on Oct 16.

Shapiro said the club will hold monthly meetings.

The multiplayer games to come are varied in their style and objectives.

“We play a lot of [Super Smash Bros Brawl] and Mario Kart,” Shapiro said. “We also love Katamari Damacy. It’s weird, but pretty cool because we get to roll up people who are kicking and screaming.”

Last year, a video game club was formed but it never got going.

Last year Strout was talking to teacher and club advisor, Mercedes Foster English and the idea got started.

She said “I was talking with ms foster about her summer playing portal and I was saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be awesome to start a video game club?’”

Strout said last year the people that signed up didn’t come to meetings.

Freshman Alex Rick joined the club and said he was drawn by the brawl tournaments and video games on Fridays.

Rick said, “It doesn’t take up my time because it’s all at school.”

The video games that will be played in the future have a diversity of styles due to the fact members are allowed to bring in there own games they want to play with others.

“I get to kill people without actually killing people. It helps me get out my violence.” Rick said.
