Juniors take a trip to the twenties

This December all juniors will be given the chance to take a trip to the 1920’s and experience a party that Gatsby would approve of for a grade in both their english and history classes.

The event will be on December 16th, from five to seven, with check in starting at 4:30, in the gym. The event will occur while English students are reading The Great Gatsby, and while the history classes will be studying the 1920’s.

At the event, students will learn a type of swing dancing called the Lindy Hop, and participate in a Langston Hughes poetry jam, all to give the event a 20’s vibe.

Social Studies teacher Allison Cota and librarian Susan Stutzman both came up with the idea in an effort to incorporate both the English and history curriculum in a fun event and give the students a shared experience.

“It would be an alternative assessment, rather than a test or an essay or a debate, that would be more interactive,” Cota said.

Cota said their vision was to have an event that was fun but also have educational value.

“I think it will give students an alternative way to interact with material, in a really kinestetic way,” Cota said, “And will give them a chance to embrace the history of the time.”

A student committee is currently helping with the event planning. They will be helping with decorations, snacks, and music.

Cota said that the student committee was formed so that students would get interested and excited for the event. The committee will be in charge of publicity and event planning, and all those on the committee will receive extra credit for their help.

Junior Blythe Hyman is a part of the student committee.

“We really hope people will get excited about the event,” Hyman said, “I have a vintage dress that I’m hoping to dress up in.”

Junior Jack Barney said that he likes the idea.

“It sounds like a great way to spend the weekend,” Barney said, “It will make kids try to step into the shoes of a person from the 20’s.”

Senior Bryn Daniel said she thought the event sounded like a fun alternative.

“I think this is a cool different way of learning,” Daniel said, “I think the juniors will appreciate it.”

All students who choose not to attend the event will be required to write 2 essays for their English and history classes. For those who attend, they will be able to gain extra credit by dressing in 20’s era clothing.
