Sophomores star in circus shows, daring acts

They float through the air with the greatest of ease, these daring young teens on the flying trapeze. Sophomores Maddie Loduca and Danielle Foreman perform on the trapeze, ariel rope, ariel straps, double trapeze and clown with the Circus Spire Troupe at Kinetic Arts in Oakland.

Loduca and Foreman are suspended 15 feet in the air, holding onto nothing but rope or fabric draped down from the ceiling, or sitting on a still trapeze holding the both of them.

Foreman started taking circus classes at the Kinetic Arts Center at the age of nine after seeing her friend’s older sister perform with them.

“I had grown up going to her shows and I have always been interested in it,” Foreman said.

Foreman then started taking a couple classes a week.

“By the time I had turned ten I was accepted into my first circus troupe,” Foreman said.

Loduca said she started two years ago, after being introduced to the Kinetic Arts Center by Foreman.

Foreman and Loduca practice fifteen to twenty hours a week, depending on whether or not they are in show season.

“I am at [my circus gym] six days a week when we do a big show in March,” Foreman said. “We spend about six months training for that.”

They perform for three weekends in March, local street fairs in the summer, and private events throughout the year.

For their performances in March, they wear costumes depending on who their character is, compared to the street fairs in which everyone wears the same spandex suits.

Loduca said her favorite part was performing and being with the people from her troupe.

“It’s a great way to stay in shape and be yourself,” said Loduca.

Foreman’s favorite part is also performing, and she too has a strong bond with the people she works with.

“My favorite part about working with my troupe is the people; they are like my family. I am also in love with performing,” Foreman said.

Loduca said she plans to continue with the troupe up until college.

“It’s a great way to stay in shape and be yourself,” Loduca said.

Foreman said she is not sure if she will continue after high school.

“I would love to find a way to balance it with college,” said Foreman.
