Top 5 reasons to go to the homecoming game

Top+5+reasons+to+go+to+the+homecoming+game

Homecoming is just two weeks away, and you may already be planning your Friday night activities for the next couple weeks. Here are the top reasons why you should not miss the homecoming football game.

1. Start your own chant

Through the first couple home games this year, the creativity level for irrelevant chants has been off the charts. From “War Horse!” to “Air Bud 2!” to “Mister Cowherd!”, virtually any chant with a good rhythm has caught on with the PHS crowd. There are the hostile chants (“Start the bus!”) and pointless chants (“football team!”)—there are no boundaries of what you can say. Just come prepared with your own chant, get a few friends to shout with you, and you might just be able to start a crowd-wide chant.

2. Be hostile, and loved for it

Have you ever just felt like going up to someone and shouting, “you suck!” with genuine hostility? Come to the Homecoming game, direct your insults towards the other team, and you will be praised by classmates. At the NCS basketball game last year, the crowd sang “Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye” while the clock was running down and we were winning. The other team completely gave up, and it was very satisfying to witness. Let’s try to make Witter Field a truly hostile environment, where the opposing team is just thinking about when they will be able to leave and find shelter from verbal abuse. On top of that, you are helping our team by demoralizing the opponents.

3. Support your classmates

Players on the football team have said that they play at a higher level when the crowd is cheering for them. There’s nothing worse than losing the homecoming football game and Alameda High will be a tough matchup. Help the team win by encouraging players after a mistake, and also cheering when they make great plays. Ladies can also encourage their prospective men by wearing their jerseys to the game.

4. I’m With the Band & Mascot

The PHS pep band has taken a liking to Katy Perry songs this season, and the crowd seems to like it. Get your fix of “Last Friday Night” and “Hot and Cold,” pep band style. Also, Highlander mascot junior Cole Becker has mastered the art of energizing a crowd. Sporting a purple kilt, Cole is known for his Lord of the Rings and Braveheart monologues.

5. Exciting players

Even if you are not a football fan, there are some players to look out for on this year’s team that are simply exciting to watch. Senior William Meredith (#38) seems to do something amazing every time the ball is in his hands. Versus Moreau Catholic, Meredith returned a punt return for an 80-yard touchdown, while juking out five defenders on the way. You can expect some video game caliber highlights.
