Youth Ambassadors highlight issues

Youth Ambassadors meet and discuss teen culture and concerns at PHS weekly.

Youth Ambassadors is open to anyone and meets every thursday at lunch in room 15 to discuss teen culture and concerns to improve the environment at PHS.

Counselor Amanda Carlson said that Youth Ambassadors is open to anyone who wants to discuss: school climate, teen issues and for students who want a place to have a voice.

The Youth Ambassador program originally started at PMS. The program came to Piedmont with the help of retired Director of Student Services Brooke Zimmerman and Clinician Kech Carrera.

“It began in middle school for the purpose of discussing bullying and the schools environment and since people liked it so much it was transferred to the high school,” four year ambassador sophomore Jo Ireland said.

The Youth Ambassador program discusses a variety of topics that affect high school students.

Fifth year ambassador sophomore Ami Felsion said that some of the topics include bullying, diversity day, teen suicide and transitioning into high school.

“We act upon what we say to make a difference in peoples’ lives and try to make the Piedmont community a better and safer place through small and big approaches,” Felsino said.

The ambassadors role at PHS is to help create a good school environment.

“Youth Ambassadors are extremely important at Piedmont because we can make a huge change in our community by doing such small things,” Felsino said.

Ireland said that discussing problems at Piedmont helps people learn about their school environment.

“Sometimes talking about the problems at school can give other students a broader perspective of the environment they will be learning in for the next four years,” Ireland said.

Felsino said the Youth Ambassadors program creates leaders who want to go out and do good for the community.

“I like to do something nice every single day because you don’t even know how much happiness goes to somebody who isn’t the jock or the prettiest of the group, and to have an interesting conversation with them or even just to saying ‘hi’ makes their day,” Felsino said.

Felsino said that he also loves to see people smile, it’s a win win situation, he make their day, they make his what could be better?

“It is absolutely important to change and try to achieve to make the community into an awesome place where everybody are each others friends,” Felsino said. “Nobody feels like all the social groups are divided.”

The goal for Youth Ambassadors is to help change the school to form a safer and better learning environment.

Carlson said that they are a group of students interested in current events, school and teen issues. They discuss them and talk about if there is anything they can change or do to make our community and school better. Or they just listen to each others opinions and enjoy time together at lunch.

“I honestly feel the ambassadors totally changed the climate of PMS and made school safer for kids,” Zimmerman said.

Youth Ambassadors work with other leadership groups at school to get more insight of student problems.

“We meet with the peer advisors, who advise, add to and take in the students input,” Ireland said.

The program brings events to the school to inform the students and faculty about the outside world. Carlson said that they are looking to bring a Diversity program here to the high school.
