AP Art and AP Ceramics went on a fieldtrip to California College of Arts to blow glass on October 10.

California College of Arts (CCA) is one of the premier glass blowing colleges and the students will be taught about glass blowing by professors there.

Gillian Bailey, the AP art teacher who planned the event, said she hopes the field trip will give the advanced students a college workshop experience, and also and experience an experience that they wouldn’t normally get to have in class.

Bailey came up with the idea to take her students on this fieldtrip because her husband is a glass blower and he got her into it more. For most of the students this will be their first experience with glass blowing but a few have taken classes where they got to blow glass.

Senior Amber Ellis who is in AP art (a 2D class), says she is excited for the field trip because she gets to work with glass, a 3D art, and she rarely gets to do 3D art.

Bailey hopes that from this field trip, the students will learn to deal with a studio art class at a college level. She hopes that they will also have an appreciation for a new medium.

Ellis said she is planning to go to an art college so this will help her decide if she might want to take a glass blowing class in the future.

During the event, half the students did glass blowing while the other half did glass painting and then they switched midway through. The class did multiple gatherings of glass and then colored them. The class then twisted the pieces and dipped them back into the gloss to the shapes their glassy finish. The class also painted onto cups using glass based paints.

“I liked that we were able to experience a new form of art with our class. It was also fun to see how professionals blow glass”, said Senior AP art student Hannah Hodess.
