Basketball team builds off last year’s success, playoff run

Basketball tryouts were recently held on Monday November 5th and Tuesday November 6th. The freshmen went on the court first at 6:15pm, followed by the sophomores at 7:15, and then the juniors and seniors both went at 7:45.

A big concern for most of the schools sports team is the league change and whether the teams will face new difficulties. Our school is the smallest school of all the schools of the new league that the basketball team is in.

Varsity coach Chris Lavdiotis said he is very excited about the league change because it is a great opportunity for the team to learn and develop their skills. He also said he is looking forward to the challenge because it will be a good experience for the team to play against larger and more skilled teams.

“I don’t really know what to expect of the new league but we just need to be ready to play”, said Varsity paler junior Joseph Powell.

The varsity team last year had a record of 23-7 and made it multiple rounds into NCS. They hope to meet their record this year or even beat it.

Lavdiotis said one of his main goals for the season is to win league.

Powell said that they hope to become a strong team and both he and Lavdiotis said they wanted to get a lot of fans at the home games to cheer them on.

One of the big losses on the team this year was Matt Ching, the starting point guard who moved to a boarding school for basketball. Ching set the school record for most assists in a single season last year. Joseph Powell will be taking over his spot for the upcoming season.

“I won’t be the next Matt Ching, he was a phenomenal player who I got to compete against every practice and made me a better player. But I trust my teammates and try not to think about “stepping into someone’s shoes””, said Powell.

Lavdiotis said that it is no different than someone graduating. He said it just means that it is someone else’s turn to step up.
