Quad should be revamped

Quad+should+be+revamped

Have you ever been bothered by the long, scratchy, irritating grass in the quad? Have your eyes ever been scorched by the sun reflecting off the blindingly white food service building? Have you ever been frying under the sun and wished for a place to repose? Well I, for one, have.

The school and the students should work to beautify our Quad and make it a more enjoyable central location. The Quad has a lot of potential, yet since construction finished in ’10, it seems to have just been forgotten. I’ve noticed at lunch, almost all students are inside the dark, sweltering food service building, or leave campus completely to go to Piedmont Park. If we make the Quad a shadier, greener place to be, it would foster a more welcoming and cohesive environment, creating a pleasant central location all grades could congregate in. Our four sided Quad mixed with our four grades would provide the perfect place for all grades to mingle and establish an anchor to our campus.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a quad—or quadrangle— as an area “intended as an environment for contemplation, study, or relaxation.”

Before the renovation of the Piper Café, there were benches and vines along our food service building and I think we should bring that back. Not only would it make the building less blinding in the afternoon when the sun’s reflecting off of it, but it would increase seating options for students.

I also think that the grass in the Quad should be tamer and more comfortable. Currently, it’s long, itchy, patchy, and not pleasant to sit on in the slightest. We could install some sprinklers and try and keep the grass as nice as it is in the park.

PHS’s original Quad in the 1930s where students could congregate, complete with a fountain and lawn.

I also think we should add more trees if at all possible. The Quad can become an oven just baking in the sun all day with virtually no shade. If we planted some more trees, with time the Quad could be transformed into someplace everyone would want to be.

I understand that making this happen takes money and time. I think it could work though if part of our Senior gift gave money to beautify the Quad, and also students could volunteer to help. Maybe it could be extra credit in APES, or simply count towards a student’s community service hours. Regardless, I think students would be happy to help, seeing as it would directly benefit them.
