Picture of a Christmas tree I just finished decorating. Generic picture of a sunset. Baby animal, looking adorable, with big eyes.

These are just some of the photos that Instagram is filled with.

According to Apple, Instagram currently has approximately 80 million users.

Instagram has become a new form of social media, that is gaining popularity within the teen population.

The free app is a program that allows people to post pictures and follow others who post pictures, much like Twitter. The app has become popular among students who own iPhones, Androids and iPod Touches.

Included with the app are many different filters to modify pictures, such as “Early bird” and “1977”. The filters are used to edit photos either to make them more vintage or professional looking.

Junior Chad Finkel has an Instagram and said he likes to use to the filters in many of his photos.

“I got an Instagram because I was able to take a neat picture of nature or sunsets for example and put a lens over it to make it look better,” Finkel said, “I mainly post pictures of cool surroundings. For instance I have the skyline of New York City and a picture of the beach I was near in Mexico.”

Sophomore Rosie Schwartz also has an Instagram and said she likes to post pictures of her dog, friends, and views.

Another user is sophomore Maddie Baum who said that her friend convinced her to join Instagram.

Users can follow their friends and can even follow many celebrities, such as models or actors.

“I’m following Kendall Jenner because her pictures are cool and I’m jealous of her life,” Baum said.

Schwartz is also a Kardashian fan.

“I follow Kylie Jenner, cause she’s so cool,” Schwartz said.

“I mainly just post whatever I like,” Baum said, “I’m not really into it for the likes like some people are.”

Finkel also said that he does not post for the likes, but appreciates them.

“I do not post for likes but it’s always a good time when I look back and see more than 10 people like my photo,” Finkel said.

Schwartz said that she enjoys getting likes.

“I find I get more likes if I post something, that more people can relate to, like a funny saying or something,” Schwartz said.

The app also allows users to upload their instagram photos on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, and other social media sites.

Senior Sam Colburn does not use the app but said that the app is a cool way to share photos.

“It’s a medium through which people can express themselves more visually than they can with Facebook,” Colburn said.
