Bears and Highlanders unite: PHS orchestra to play with Cal band in concert

The symphonic band will collaborate in concert with the UC Berkeley wind band on March 20.

In the concert, the symphonic band and the Cal wind band will play some solo pieces and they will also collaborate on a few songs.

“It opens us up to new sounds and styles of music since every band has their own special talent that sets them apart from everyone else,” junior Ryan Nakamura said.

Nakamura said his overall sound will get better and he will learn how to play different styles of music.

“I think it will be fun, to be exposed to musicians who are much better and more skilled in their instruments,” Nakamura said. “It will be interesting.”

Senior Allison Quantz said this band collaboration will expose them to more experienced players and by hearing they will be able to improve.

“I hope that as a band we learn to listen to more than just our specific parts so we can learn to play better together as a group,” Quantz said.

This concert collaboration follows a similar collaboration with Brazzissimo, in which they performed in a similar structure with some solo pieces and some collaborations.

“Much like our concert with Brazzissimo earlier in the year, this concert with the Cal band allows us to explore possibilities for continuing in music beyond high school,” senior Cooper Wetherbee said. “It’s inspiring to hear and work with groups of musicians who are so dedicated to playing their instruments.”

Wetherbee said it will be hard to follow their collaboration concert with Brazzissimo in December, but he is anticipating a great performance.

“I want to use this opportunity to learn from the commitment demonstrated by the Cal band to become a better trumpet player, in terms of my preparation and technique,” Wetherbee said.

Quantz said band has been working hard, trying many new musical pieces in preparation.

“I hope the event goes really well,” Quantz said. “We’ve been working and trying a lot of new pieces for this concert and working hard so I have high hopes.”
