Camp Augusta provides wilderness experience

Camp Augusta provides wilderness experience

Screen Shot 2013-03-19 at 11.45.59 PM  Camp Augusta offers several trips this summer for students interested in exploring the land surrounding the Sierra Mountains this summer and this year there are new programs for high schoolers.

“The idea for Wilderness Trips generated to provide children an opportunity to explore and learn more about the natural world,” said Camp Augusta’s Assistant Director Tom Cox. “Challenge themselves in an adventurous setting, provide a unique experience in a safe environment and to allow us to provide the Augusta experience to children who are unable to attend summer camp.”

Cox said the activities vary from trip to trip and there is an option to customize a trip.

“The activities of each trip vary depending on which trip it is. Details of each trip can be found on http://wildernessaugusta.org/,” Cox said. “We also offer the ability to customize a trip, so if you can’t find a trip you’re interested in, we invite you to suggest one and we’ll see if we can make it happen.”

Cox said that the focus of these trips is to provide campers with wilderness experience.

“Each one of our expeditions focuses on prScreen Shot 2013-03-19 at 11.46.10 PMoviding campers with a genuine wilderness experience in which they can develop relevant leadership skills while honing their awareness of both environmental issues and personal safety,” Cox said.

Cox said that campers will learn to be confident in the wilderness setting.

“Whether on flat ground or towering rock, on two wheels or four hooves. Classic Camp Augusta touches of Wish, Wonder, and Surprise will round out the journey,” Cox said. “Staff counselors will also offer campers extensive feedback regarding their personal growth and areas of challenge throughout the trip.”

Cox said that students will benefit by having the opportunity to do something they have never done before.

“In a group of like-minded youths who are all seeking to grow and challenge themselves, each student will receive direct mentoring from their two trip leaders and feedback on their personal growth, strengths and challenges,” Cox said.

Board President Steve Rogers said he has spent lots of time in the back country doing different types of trips with his family.

“I believe spending time in the backcountry is one of the most rewarding experiences a young adult can have,” Rogers said. “This program’s success will empower current and future PHS students to enjoy nature in the backcountry for their entire lives.”Screen Shot 2013-03-19 at 11.46.18 PM

Cox said that each year Camp Augusta adds more trips to focus on providing options for adventures.

“We’re looking to expand the leadership opportunities of the students in the next few years, as well as improving our current trips by implementing process changes based on the feedback we receive,” Cox said.

Rogers said that he likes the program because he enjoys the challenge of organizing the programs for the summer.

“I am a fan of this program because a back country journey is difficult to organize and for a novice, dangerous to undertake without an experienced guide,” Rogers said.

To register students can call the Camp Augusta office for information on the registration process online, 530-265-3702.

Cox said there are between six and eight students that go on each trip and the price depends on what trip the students registers for.

“Spots available to students vary depending on the trip. Trips vary in cost between $750 to $1500 depending on the length of the trip and the activities involved. Check out our wilderness website. http://wildernessaugusta.org/,” Cox said.

Cox said that the dates of the trips that are being offered this summer are: Backpacking or canoeing June 16th-22nd, Biking and backpacking June 23rd-July 6th, Rock Climbing/Backpacking or Horse-packing (currently full) July 7th-20th, Custom trips July 21st – Aug 3rd, Backpacking or biking Aug 4th-10th, Rock climbing or Backpacking August 11-17th.
