Remer commits to Stanford

In the middle of January, while at a friend’s house, senior Lauren Remer received a phone call that changed her future. With the track coach on the phone, Remer was welcomed onto the Stanford track team.

On February 23, Remer signed to run track for the Stanford University for the 2013-2014 school year with a new coaching staff from Georgetown University.. Remer said she had to sign to Stanford before she heard back from other schools.

Remer said she wasn’t sure at first if she was going to run or not in college. Remer said that she did not have a preference whether to run D1 or D3, but most schools that she wanted to go to were mainly D1 schools.

“I did [think about playing soccer in college],” Remer said, “I’ve more considered intermural or club not necessarily the varsity level at the school. I think I definitely would have loved to play soccer. Track gave me the best option, I guess. I was happy to do either.”

Remer said that running in college has not always been a goal of hers.

“It’s kind of been a goal I’ve been discovering. I haven’t always wanted to run in college, but as I have progressed during the season it has become more, not only likely, but it seemed like a greater interest to me, so when the opportunity arose, I wanted to take it,” Remer said.

Remer said that her parents are very proud of her that she has gotten into Stanford.

“My dad has been in love with Stanford, he wanted a kid to go to Stanford. More than that, just I really wanted to go to Stanford as well,” Remer said. “It had always been one of my top schools so my parents are so happy I was able to reach my goal.”

Remer said that sports have always been a big part in her life and her family’s life.

“My sister is a junior at UC Davis. My brother graduated from USF,” Remer said. “He played D1 baseball as a left handed pitcher there, and right now he is at spring training in Arizona waiting to find out what level he’ll be playing at for the Cincinnati Reds.”

Remer said her parents attended all of her track meets. Remer said her father pushed her into the sport.

“Before I was in sixth grade he had me see different coaches to see if there was talent there,” Remer said, “My dad likes to get workouts from different people, he has definitely been a motivating force behind me. He has really tried to get me to be the best athlete I can.”

Remer said that at Stanford, she wants to excel in track.

“I want to get better. I think that will definitely be reachable just in the fact that it is really intense training, you have specialized coaches,” Remer said.

Remer said she is recruited to be part of a four by four team at Stanford.

“Just to see where our four by four team can go, it’d be awesome to see if we can go pretty far,” Remer said, “I’ll be trying out for the four hundred, the four by four, and I am looking into either running the two [hundred] or the eight [hundred] as well.”

Remer said that she has not decided how many years she will be running on the track team.

“I am definitely going to see how it goes this year, see if it allows me to take the course I want to take. I’d be happy to run four years, I’d be excited to,” Remer said. “It depends on how the year progresses.”

Remer said coaches in Piedmont have been a great help to her running.

“Chris Smith has always been a big supporter. He has always helped me, he has signed me up for invitationals, pushed me, talked to me, he has always been a supporting role in that,” Remer said. “Additionally I’ve had some great coaches. I have had a really positive experience.”

Remer said she will not be receiving an athletic her initial year at Stanford.
