A fire was lighted in the 500’s building bathroom during school hours a couple weeks ago. Another attempt occurred a few days after but was not lighted.

“It was lit with some kind of device, a lighter, a match, something, but they took all of the seat covers and piled it up with a lot of tissue that they unrolled, so they made a bonfire type thing in the bathroom,” custodian Ras Medura said.

A few days after the first incident of, there appeared to be another attempt to do the same thing, Medura said.

“When we walked in, the tissues were in a pile about to be lit,” Medura said. “I think somebody walked in on the person.”

Medura said said there was not extensive damage in the bathrooms and that the maintenance staff did not have to paint or remove anything.

“It wasn’t very much damage, but it could’ve been a lot more if the new alarm system hadn’t been active and if we weren’t around and able to respond right away,” Medura said.

The administration has been actively trying to find the vandalizer.

“I can tell you that this is a discipline matter, that we are investigating this and any vandalism we come across,” principal Rich Kitchens said. “Since it is a discipline matter, I cannot comment on any details surrounding the investigation and consequences.”

Medura said he thinks the vandalizer lit the fires out of boredom or wanted to let everybody get out of class when the fire alarm went off.

“Fires are really dangerous, and they shouldn’t be taken lightly,” Medura said.
