Troubadors spread holiday cheer

photo(6)The Troubadors decked the school halls with beautiful song on Friday Dec. 13 as part of the annual winter Holiday-O-Grams. During periods 3 and 5, they went from classroom to classroom, delivering roses, letters, and candy while serenading the students with music.

“It’s something that we look forward to every year,” said Troubadors Music Director senior Emma Grove. “I don’t know about everyone else, but we definitely like doing it. And I feel like the student body appreciates it too.”

Sophomore Claire Altieri said that Holiday-O-Grams are definitely a bonus to the school.

“It’s nice to have the Troubadors come in and sing,” Altieri said. “I think it’s very valuable to the holiday spirit.”

Grove said that the Holiday-O-Gram serenades are partly a promotional thing for the Troubadors because kids tell their parents about them, and then the parents get interested. The serenades also serve to recruit students for next year’s batch of Troubadors.

“It’s a school organization. Whether we’re affiliated with the school or not, we’re still all members of Piedmont High,” Grove said. “It’s sort of our way of contributing.”

Grove said that the Troubadors rehearse every Sunday for two hours from September to December.

“This year, since 50 percent of our Troubs are new, we’ve had to spend more time on our base repertoire,” Grove said. “We have a repertoire of about 60 or 70 Christmas carols.”

Grove said that the Troubadors choose the most upbeat, fun pieces for Holiday-O-Grams.

“I’ve always thought [Holiday-O-Grams] were really fun,” Grove said. “I would say that they’re a really nice break from class for a lot of people.”

Though Grove is sad to no longer be part of the Troubadors next year, she said that because the group is so strong right now, she knows next year is going to be a good year for them.
