The school has upgraded its technical infrastructure by setting up a new PC lab in place of the Mac lab in Room 48. The previous Macs have been moved over to an adjoining room, which will serve as an extra computer room for classes.

The PC lab was set up due to the increased number of computer classes and a general need for an upgrade, which includes 27-inch HD displays and HP desktops.

“With ten periods of computer classes,  two computer classrooms are necessary,” Assistant Superintendent Randall Booker said.

In addition to the growing class sizes, a strong push for improving computer education called for equipment that students can work with.

“We wanted to make sure that we are developing courses for students that interest them and get more people to sign up,” Booker said. “To achieve that, we need to give teachers and students fast and reliable computers.”

Computer teacher Nathan Mattix, who teaches Joy of Computing and AP Computer Science in the PC lab, is thrilled to be teaching with the new equipment.

“These are the best computers I have been able to work with ever since I started teaching,” Mattix said. “They fulfilled my dream wish of getting 27-inch HD monitors.”

The faster speeds and comfortable displays of the computers benefit the class and helps teaching run more smoothly, Mattix said.

Assistant Principal Eric Mapes, who helped with the implementation of the PC lab, believes that the adding the lab was necessary in the current age of technology.

“Technology is moving so fast that we need to make sure we’re caught up,” Mapes said. “Recent improvements are the first steps… I think it’s great.”

Mapes said with increasing popularity in the computer science courses, the improved hardware ensures that students have the resources they need.

“If I were a student, I would love a class that taught coding,” Mapes said. “The school was happy to provide the hardware so teachers would have the necessary tools to teach that.”
