C&CC still without new director for next year

The College and Career Center is still on the hunt for a new director to replace Sandi Brod when she retires at the end of the school year.

Principal Brent Daniels is responsible for writing the job description and hiring the candidate, said PHS Parents’ Club President Katie Korotzer.

Daniels has appointed a committee of parents, teachers, counselors and administrators to interview candidates and to make a recommendation.

The committee has been through over 30 applications. They called in finalists for interviews and offered the position to the top candidate, who later declined the offer.

“The offer was being considered heavily, but both sides agreed that it was better not to proceed at this time,” Daniels said.

Daniels  said that the committee will revisit the applications it has already received and will investigate new applications as well.

“The goal is to have someone in place by March,” Daniels said. “We need to stay focused on finding the best candidate.”

Daniels hopes to finish interviewing by mid-February and hire a candidate by March so he or she can transition into the position throughout the spring and take over when the new school year starts.

Brod will be working reduced hours for the remainder of the school year, and volunteers will continue to staff the Center.

“It’s urgent that we have the position filled,” Daniels said. “However, we want to really honor the process because it will enable us to find the best candidate.”

At this time, the empty position is not a concern given that most of Center’s events happen in the fall, while spring is always slow, said a parent volunteer at the Center.

Both Daniels and Korotzer said that experience and knowledge of the college process are important qualities, but that good collaboration skills are equally important.

“We are looking for a director who will work hand-in-hand with the guidance counselors, and we want the students to have someone to get support from throughout the college process,” Daniels said.

The director’s position involves coordinating events, administering the PSAT & Mock ACT, training volunteers, helping families learn about financial aid and assisting with college applications and essay writing, according to the job description that has been posted on Ed Join, an education job website.

Daniels hopes that the new director continues the shift toward Case Studies Nights and the use of Naviance, an online portal for college information.

“I’d like to see that technology go to the next level, but I credit Sandi for the foundation,” Daniels said.
