School adds new services

With each year, PHS seeks to improve itself, and upgrading student services is one way of doing that. The implementation of new water filling stations as well as a new snack window are aimed to help enhance and streamline the school.

The new snack window was opened a few weeks ago in an effort to help students get food quicker, Piper Cafe chef M’Lisa Kelley said.SnackWindows

“Not only are Mondays long, but the brunch break is super short and we want to support the students,” Kelley said.

Principal Brent Daniels and Assistant Principal Eric Mapes came up with the initial idea for a snack window, Kelley said.

“After we heard about it, the ladies at food service were more than happy to implement and help,” Kelley said.

Currently, the snack window is only open during Monday brunch, which is five minutes shorter than brunches on other days of the week.

“Monday is when there is a real crunch for time and everybody is hungry,” Kelley said. “Most often, Mr. Mapes comes down to food service and mans the snack window himself.”

The snack window only offers room temperature or shelf-stable brunch offerings and some beverages, Kelley said.

“There are no hot items, free fruit or perishables,” Kelley said. “It’s really just a quick and convenient way for students to get simple nourishment.”

Along with the snack window, four new water-filling stations have been installed throughout the PHS campus.

“The stations fill up bottles quickly, are low maintenance and perhaps save water,” maintenance technician Steve Lucas said. “When people normally drink from water fountains, some water inherently passes your mouth and is wasted.”

The stations, called “Haws 1900,” are easily installable, ADA compliant, and cheap, Lucas said. The cost $500 each.
