Students campaign for ASB

Students+campaign+for+ASB

Leading ladies will take on a whole new meaning in the 2015-2016 ASB elections on May 29. Leadership positions are available for next year’s sophomore, junior and senior class presidents, as well as for ASB president and vice president. So far the only candidates are girls.

Freshman HannaMarie Hohener will run against freshmen Anna Goldberg and Alison Prendergast, who are running as co-presidents, for the sophomore class. The junior class president candidates are sophomores Alisha Lewis and Natalie Stollman. Junior Laine Ratzer will run for senior class president, juniors Jenny Hosler and Jane Kingston for ASB vice president, and juniors Maryse Suppiger and Katie St. Claire for ASB president.

Maryse“Leadership is important because there is a disconnect between the administration and the student body,” Suppiger said. “ASB, particularly this year, has tried to work on bridging that gap so the students feel like this is their school.”

As a class, ASB looks for students who best represent the school and are seeking to improve every student’s overall experience.

“While we love to see so many girls running, we also want to make sure that all of our school is represented by the ASB class, and boys make up a large population of PHS,” Suppiger said.

Gender equality is a topic that ASB has strived to promote, but they aim to represent everyone in the school equally.

“I think [this election] says that our school is very open to gender equality,” Lewis said. “But of course, I encourage anyone who is interested to apply or run for ASB.”

However, as boys have historically taken lead roles,  ASB is excited to break those gender stereotypes.

“I think it’s great that only girls are running,” Hosler said. “In the past, we’ve had predominantly male elections and it’s about time things get switched around.”

Students will be able to vote for their individual class president, and the entire student body will be able to vote for ASB president and vice president after the candidates give speeches during the last week of May.

Students often vote for those who they think will improve their next school year, Suppiger said.Katie

“The more efficient the class, the better rallies and dances will be, and the more events we could hold,” Suppiger said. “We can always do a little more to make students’ lives better.”

Anyone who would like to be in the ASB class next year can attend a meeting on May 14 or 15 to apply for an appointed position. ASB looks for students from all demographics to represent their class, especially those who have positive attitudes and leadership abilities.

“If no guys are applying, I guess no boys want to have [leadership positions],” Ratzer said. “Their loss, hashtag feminism.”
