Get your spirit on

School spirit is more than wearing purple to the rally and screaming yourself hoarse at a football game. Yes, buying a shirt from the new school store is a good starting point, but true school spirit manifests itself as a mindset rather than an outfit. We are all responsible for shaping the school that we attend.

Complaints may abound, but at the end of the day, we are all extremely lucky to attend Piedmont High School, and not only because of its stellar national ranking.

As well as lots of funding for arts and sports programs, we have a dedicated faculty and administrators who greet students by name in the hallways.

No, school will never be perfect, but we have numerous opportunities to make it better, which is a blessing in itself. From attending Site Council meetings to simply talking with administrators, we have a chance to be the change we wish to see in the school.

Rather than whining, support your teachers and peers for their efforts. Instead of crouching in the shadows and waiting for college to roll around, embrace what Piedmont has to offer.

For our fellow seniors, we are facing our last year as Highlanders. It’s our last chance to see Piedmont plays or to finally make it to our friends’ water polo games and a capella performances.

Many of us have gone to school together for 13 years, and we all share — or at least we all should share — a common pride in our school. The clock is ticking, so take senior year as an opportunity to branch out. Make a new friend, try a new sport or finally dress up for a rally.

To the freshmen and underclassmen out there: showing spirit can be uncomfortable. We’ve all sat quiet and awkward in the freshman section during rallies, and we know it can be scary to express your affection for a school that might not seem to give it back.

But if we show a bit of love, then maybe, just maybe, we’ll find that the school has a lot more to offer than we first thought.
