You are sitting in class as the scratch of pencil on your paper thumps like a rythme atop your desk until something happens. Sounds of singing fill your ear and brightly dressed people surround you. The Troubadours are delivering Heart-O-Grams, making it feel like Valentine’s Day.

Every year ASB celebrates Valentine’s Day by giving the students a special experience, different from an ordinary school day. Match-O-Matics, the online survey that lets students see who their best matches are, and Heart-O-Grams, the messages students can send by having members of ASB or the Troubadours go into classes and sing to the recipients, are just a couple nuances ASB has added to the holiday.

“Troubs has been around for a really long time and I know the relationship between ASB and Troubs started pretty early,” said Troubadours program director senior Ryan Howzell. wheelretreattroubs

The Troubadours, a student-run singing group that performs mainly outside of school, was formed over 20 years by Allen Harvey, who was PHS’s music director at the time. For as long as many in ASB or Troubadours can remember, the two groups have teamed up on holidays to give a fun experience for students.

The experience given by the two groups usually gets a positive reception among students.

“It’s fun going into freshman classes especially because they have never had it happen before so they tend to be really excited,” Howzell said.

Howzell said she loves seeing people’s smiles and hearing people sing along to the different songs that the Troubadours perform. She also said that she believes that generally students really enjoy what ASB and Troubs do.

“ASB’s main goal is to make school a happier place,” ASB President senior Maryse Suppiger said.

Suppiger said that the holidays provide a great opportunity for students to dress up, play music and have fun. If students didn’t celebrate holidays at school, then it would become a very boring place and ASB takes many steps so students will enjoy their holiday experiences.

Over the four years she has been with ASB there has always been be a tradition of celebrating different holidays and Troubs has always wanted to help them by singing.  The purchasing of the notes or Match-O-Matics surveys that Troubs help to sell, go toward fundraising for ASB, Suppiger said.treelightingposedtroubs

“There’s a lot of preparation that goes into all of it,” sophomore class president Anna Goldberg said.

In preparation for Valentine’s Day, ASB creates Heart-O-Grams and sells them at lunch. ASB also purchases candies and roses that are delivered along with the Heart-O-Grams. The process entails sorting through notes and people’s schedules to find out when who and where the Heart-O-Grams should be delivered, which is done by ASB members.

When talking about the affects that the festivities put on by  ASB and Troubadours have on the student body, Suppiger said that she likes seeing people get out of their comfort zones and enjoying themselves in the holiday mood created by Valentine’s Day.
