Students sing through the hills of Austria

The halls are alive with the Sound of Music, and the first three notes just happen to be Do-Re-Mi.

Student thespians and instrumentalists will be presenting “The Sound of Music’” from Feb. 4 to 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alan Harvey Theater.

The musical takes place in Austria in 1938, where nun Maria is sent to the home of a widowed Captain Von Trapp to care for his seven children. Although there is a rough start, Maria brings music into the family and eventually wins over their hearts.

The show is directed, choreographed, and produced by dance and English teacher Amy Moorhead.

Maria_Capt. in Costume (13) “I thought it was time to do another Rodgers and Hammerstein musical—the last one we did was ‘Oklahoma!’ which was three years ago,” Moorhead said. “So it’s kind of nice to change up the era and the style of the music.”

The leads will be sophomore Abby Wilson who will play the part of Maria and junior Danny DeBare who will play Captain Von Trapp.

This is DeBare’s third year in the musical and first time being a lead. DeBare said that with being a lead comes a lot of rehearsal, around seven to eight hours per week in addition to practicing at home.

Senior Olivia Arrabit said that this year is very different than past years because In the past usually all the leads have been seniors, or the majority of them are, but this year there sophomores who have bigger parts.

“It’s different, but it’s fun.” Arrabit said.

This is Arrabit’s fourth year doing the musical and she will be performing the part of Elsa Shreder, Captain Von Trapp’s girlfriend who is hoping to be his wife one day.

Arrabit said that this year is also different because of its few ensemble parts. In this year’s production, the ensemble will be playing the nuns and party goers.

“There is almost no ensemble singing, so it makes rehearsals much different because there are a lot of people who are sitting around doing nothing,” Arrabit said. “But it also might make the musical better because there is less chaos on stage.”

The musical will be freshman Jackson Cavenaugh’s first musical theater performance. Cavenaugh will play the role of Friedrich Von Trapp, the second oldest of the Von Trapps.

Cavenaugh said that although the musical is time consuming, it is really fun to get to know upperclassmen.

“Everyone in the show is of equal value, and I truly believe that,” Moorhead said.Von Trapp Girls 1 (13)

Flute player junior Veronica Wong said that in comparison to being part of the actual cast, the orchestra schedule involves a lot less time because the musicians are only responsible for their own parts whereas those on stage need to practice with other cast members. The musicians started practicing with the cast daily on Jan. 30, which marked the beginning of tech week.

“The music is fairly difficult in some sections, but I really like it as a whole,” Wong said.

One major change to the musical this year is that on Thursday and Sunday night, student admission will cost $11, but on Friday and Saturday, student prices will bump up to $13. Morehead said that the reason for the change in price is to encourage students to attend the Thursday and Sunday night performances. Moorhead said that in the past, Friday and Saturday nights have typically been more impacted, so in order to change that and not have to turn anyone away, they decided to increase student prices on those nights.

General admission for adults will be $17 for all nights.

‘The Sound of Music’ is a family show so Moorhead encourages students to spread the word to the little ones in the community to attend the performance.

“The Sound of Music is a classic,” Moorhead said. “It’s a favorite, so I think people will really enjoy it.”
