WP_20131210_002The Piedmont Highlanders Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the St. Vincent Mustangs 54-39 on Tuesday night in their first home game of the season.

Starters for the Highlanders included sophomores Jordan Torio and Sean Rodriguez, junior Graham Low, and seniors Joseph Powell and Chris Fetterolf.

The Highlanders played a sluggish first quarter but lead 13-7 at the end of the quarter. Fetterolf scored the first points, posting up on a St. Vincent defender for a quick shot. The slow play continued until halftime with the Highlanders taking a four point lead into the half with a score of 21-17.

The second half was the opposite of the first, with high intensity play from the Highlanders who had a strong third quarter, scoring 20 points. The Highlanders went into the 4th quarter with a comfortable lead of 41-32, and finished strong ending the game with the final score of 54-39.

The first home game of the season drew a medium sized crowd including some students. Senior Russell Jang attended the basketball game. Jang likes basketball because he can come to more games, unlike football which is played every Friday.

“Coming to a few games every week or two, I can see the progress the team makes over the season,” Jang said.

Head Coach Chris Lavdiotis said the team still has a lot to improve on in their game, as it is so early in the season, but there were also some positives.

“We did a great job driving in the lane in the second half, it helped generate more points for us. [Rodriguez] executed in the lane very well,” he said.

Rodriguez was the Highlanders leading scorer, with 19 points. Rodriguez said the Highlanders lacked intensity for most of the game.

“Coming off a few victories, we were a little bit cocky going into the game,” he said. “We definitely did not play our best this game and it is going to be important for us to not underestimate opponents for the rest of the season.”

Rodriguez said intensity was key to fueling the Highlanders victory and allowed them to extend their lead over St. Vincent in the second half.

The Highlanders, 4-1, will be playing at Cloverdale next Tuesday and hope to continue their winning streak.
