The Red Rock U16 boys volleyball team placed twelfth in a recent Sacramento tournament that began on Dec 11, 2021. The tournament took place over the course of six days with four to five games per day. The team was ranked as the 41st seed out of 41 teams at the beginning of the tournament.
“It was nice to see our work pay off,” said PHS Junior and RedRock team member Wilson Wong. “We were very happy with the tournament.”
The other Piedmont students on the Red Rock team include juniors Ryan Stokes, Owen Kelly and Brayden Day, as well as sophomores Danny Allen, Shunji Higashi, and John Champion.
“I’ve had some really cool experiences.” said Higashi, who is the team’s setter.
The team practiced twice a week, on Fridays and Sundays, Wong said. Unfortunately, their Red Rock season ended early due to multiple players being above the age limit.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” Champion said, who plays outside setter. “I think we work well together as a team.”
Moving forward, the PHS Volleyball season is set to begin on Feb 7. The Piedmont boys volleyball program will be playing its second year. Wong, who will be a captain of the team, first started getting interested in volleyball in eighth grade. Wong decided to join the co-ed middle school team, before eventually forming the Piedmont Middle School boys volleyball team with some of his friends. When they first started out, Wong took on the role of head coach.
“I got to see all these people who had never played before come in and get super into it,” Wong said.
Eventually Wong and some of his friends decided to get more competitive with volleyball and joined the Red Rock U16 boys team.
“I’m excited for the PHS season to start,” Wong said. “I think we should be pretty good.”
