Friday Night Lights, cameras, and lots of action. Within a hoard of purple jerseys, Junior Brendan Devine is sporting something different: a camera.
Devine has been taking photos and videos of the men’s football team for three years. While attending a majority of the teams’ games, Devine ensures that videos and photos are taken of the team along with individual photos of the players themselves.
Photography has been an interest of Devine’s ever since his uncle, Tim Devine, introduced him to it when he was younger.
“My uncle is a professional photographer who taught me the basics of photography,” Devine said.
Devine uses the knowledge that he gained from his uncle while shooting for the football team and other teams as well.
Along with his uncle, Devine also learns from Piedmont Alum and sports photographer Ben Barnes. Barnes is known for his media on Instagram and other social media platforms.
“I look at Ben Barnes Media quite often and get inspiration from some stuff that he does,” Devine said.
Along with the schools’ football team, Devine said is also planning on taking photos for the basketball teams during the upcoming winter season.
When the players are walking off the field or when they are in between plays, Devine tries to take pictures when they’re playing in a more portrait style. In addition to these portrait photos, Devine said he also aims to take profile picture type photos for the players.
His instagram account, @devine.media, contains a variety of images and videos of the Cal and Piedmont football teams.
Quarterback Markos Lagios, a junior, has been helping Devine with his photography throughout high school.
“Brendan brings really good energy to the games and takes really good photos,” Lagios said.
Lagios has access to Devine’s media account, and he helps decide what photos and videos get posted onto the account. Lagios along with other players will tell Devine when to shoot certain video shots.
“Sometimes I’ll tell him when a certain play will happen so he can capture a video,” Lagios said.
Along with Lagios, junior running back and middle linebacker Tommy Ashton also has access to Devine’s media account.
“Sometimes when someone is on the sidelines looking out at the game, that looks pretty cool,” Ashton said.
Besides taking photos during the game, Ashton said the team takes photos before and after the games with Devine. These photos are then carefully looked through and once the selected photos have been chosen, they are posted onto Devine’s media account.
Devine said he will continue his photography for the remainder of his high school years and is planning to continue it throughout college.
