With the spring seasons starting in February, the Wellness Center is hoping to emphasize support towards athletes. The Wellness Centers’ resources will be directed towards athletes through posters in locker rooms, as well as direct guidance given to coaches and other athletics staff concerning their players’ well being.
Wellness Center Clinical Supervisor, Sari Sanghvi, is heading the new project.
“Something exciting that I’m personally working on is bridging communication with our Department of Athletics so that our director, Tyler Small, knows what we do and how to refer students directly. We also want to pass along that information to coaches of all sports so they can identify when they feel their athletes could benefit from some wellness support,” Sanghvi said.
Sanghvi said with the new sports season coming up the initiative is taking off now.
“We will be doing a poster campaign around the spring season starting. We will be posting QR codes so that students can remember that we are here for them,” Sanghvi said.
Sanghvi said not all highschools have Wellness Centers so Piedmonts’ is used as an example for other highschools as it’s quite unique to have a center that offers free therapy services short term and long term to students. Sanghvi said she thinks the Wellness Center has been successful in its utilization and work this year.
“I think we are achieving what we’ve set out to do here and that’s to make sure that we are reaching each and every student who feels like they need support, either socially, emotionally, either providing short term therapy or longer term support, we are here,” Sanghvi said.
With this value in mind the project has a slightly more specific goal when it comes to athletes.
“We want to support the idea that mental health is just as important as physical health,” Sanghvi said.
