Feathery costumes, clever jokes, and contagious laughter fill the Alan Harvey Theater every year in the spring. This year, the 56th annual Bird Calling Contest will take place on Friday, April 18th at 7:30pm in the Alan Harvey Theater.
“Some people just make the noises, or some people put on more of a performance that connects to the bird call, and it’s funny,” said Co Vice President of the Parents’ Club Sally Baack.
Highschoolers who sign up for the contest perform an informative and clever skit about any bird they choose, and make the bird’s call. Judges then score the skits and name the top three acts they liked best.
“We’ve been really excited for the contest, it’s so good to keep repeating the tradition,” Baack said.
An important part of the tradition is the posters that advertise the contest, where students can submit their artwork to be on the poster, and the Parents’ Club chooses their favorite to put on the poster that advertises the Bird Calling Contest, according to Baack. The winner of this year’s contest is freshman Layla Miguel.
PHS alumni are always judges, and this year PE teacher and alumni Jeff Peters, Valerie Lee, and Josh Bernstein will be the judges.
This year, for extra help, there will also be MC’s to help run the contest. This includes seniors Natalie Tsung, Ruby Johnson, Nick King, and Tommy Ashton.
“This is a really fun event for our community to come together and have fun and laugh.” Baack said.
Tickets are available for purchase on piedmontbirdcalling.ludus.com, $10 for students and $20 for adults.
