Otis Zamora, an 11 lb dachshund of English teacher Eduardo Wolbert is experiencing idiopathic tremors and occasional uncontrollable side to side head twitching in February.
“He was shaking, his head was kind of jerking back and forth, and we were honestly really freaked out. We ended up taking him to the vet, and they told us his red blood cell count was really high, abnormally high. They basically said, you need to take him to a specialist ASAP, someone who deals with more serious stuff,” Wolbert said.
Wolbert said the CT and MRI scans needed for diagnosis cost upwards of $10k, in addition the unknown costs of possible treatment.
Junior Celeste Dickason started a fundraiser on GoFundMe, which quickly reached $900 in donations from students and community members. However it was shut down because Wolbert asked Dickason to take down the page as he didn’t feel comfortable taking any sort of donations from his students.
Otis appears to be healthy at this time.
“He appears to be healthy in every other way, so we’re just enjoying every day while we can,” Wolbert said.
Wolbert said there is still a possibility that Otis’s symptoms could resolve themselves, but only time will tell.
