Our final decision as the 24-25 Ed Board was whether we were going to print matriculations for the 2025 graduating class. Our decision to do so was unanimous—we wanted not only to honor and celebrate the graduating seniors, but also offer a comprehensive list of matriculations as a resource for graduates and our community to use in the future.
Last year, as the outgoing editorial board was going through their decision to print matriculations, a number of us expressed hesitance to print matriculations. In the time since last year’s decision, however, that reticence has disappeared, and it now seems clear to us what value a list of matriculations holds in a community like Piedmont.
Every editor’s reasoning varied, but there was a consistent throughline in everyone’s thought processes: we were all excited for our future and wanted to share that with others. With this in mind, what was most important was that not everyone on the editorial board was following the same path forward. At that time of our decision, we had some senior editors that had been committed to four year universities for months, some who were still waiting to hear back from universities, and some who were thinking about attending a two year college. All of these paths and choices are valued and there is no one correct way to live the next few years. We hope that all the underclassmen and community members reading this will share our optimism for the future and understand that picking what is best for them is more valuable than conforming to the standard or shooting for goals that don’t align with who they are.
With our decision to print the senior’s plans for the coming years, we discussed a handful of unintended consequences: that the list may stress out underclassmen, fuelling the pressure in Piedmont to choose prestige over fit, or that it could encourage parents to pressure their students into thinking about college more than they already are or to a level they aren’t ready for.
Despite these fears, we think it is more important to celebrate the graduating class and let them have a sense of pride in the decision they made of what they want to do with their life. The majority of us have attended school together for the last 12 years and this is the first time ever where we will all strike out on our own, no longer having the same limited shared experiences that have shaped our elementary, middle, and high school years.
Along with other articles from this issue, the matriculations will be posted to TPHNews.com, allowing our community to reach out to any member of the Class of 2025 if they are interested in connecting about the field that the member has gone into or the college they have chosen to attend.
TPH recognizes that plans change and evolve. These matriculations were accurate at the time of uploading.
