The varsity baseball team cruised to an easy win in their scrimmage Feb. 23 against College Preparatory School with a 14-4 victory. The Highlanders scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and by the end of the third inning Piedmont led CPS 8-0.
CPS was kept scoreless by Piedmont’s strong defense until the fifth inning. This was the baseball team’s last scrimmage before the start of the regular season on Tuesday.
“We’re going to compete every day, play to win, and hopefully that equates to more wins than losses for us,” head coach Eric Olson said.
This is Olson’s first year as head coach for the varsity baseball team.
“To succeed this season we really need to be about pitching and defense, because that’s our foundation and that’s how we’re going to win. The fundamentals and basics are always the most important things for a team,” Olson said.
The team hopes to match their competition in the new WAAC-12 league this upcoming season.
“We had a pretty good season last year, and we got a lot of new depth this year, so I think we’re going to go out there this season and give everybody a run for their money,” captain senior Ryan Sullivan said.
The squad will travel to Sir Francis Drake Feb. 26 for their first regular season game.
