Yu seeks new Breakerz

With six of the seven Breakerz graduated, Senior Robert Yu embarks on a quest to find new dancers for the break dancing club.

Yu has been advertising the club since the beginning of school through word of mouth, facebook, and through the dance PE program.

“I asked Amy Moorhead to make daily announcements to her freshman classes, as well as the class I am in,” Yu said.

The club is open to anyone regardless of previous dance experience. Currently there are 12-16 active members.

“There is no audition or anything.” Yu said, “It’s just if you want to learn from me, come by to our meetings every Wednesday at lunch.”

Yu said it is very different from last year, because he not only lost dance friends but some of his closest friends as well.

“I cherished their friendship as they helped me grow as a person and as a dancer. I consider our old gang “The Brotherhood,” in fact, that is the name of our Facebook group online.” Yu said. “Not only were there 5 very close friends, but also one of the members was my brother, Michael. He was very influential in getting me to start break dancing and I would not be here today without him.”

Yu said although it is different, he is getting used to taking on more of a leadership role. “Prior to this I had always been the student. Now, I am the teacher,” Yu said.

There are only two members with experience, Vice President Junior Joseph Chan and Secretary Sophomore Alex Ngyuen, who Yu mentored last year.

Ngyuen went to workshops when he was in sixth grade held by the Breakerz.

“I thought it was some of the coolest stuff I had seen ever,” Ngyuen said. “The previous leader Johnny Tran was a good friend of the family and I slowly met all the other dancers.”

Nguyen said his role as secretary of the Breakerz is to help lead the new members to one day become as good as us.

“I look forward to watching our new members advance and being able to teach some that will hopefully join on club day,” Nguyen said.

Freshman Claire Laymon, who saw the old Breakerz club perform at Diversity Day and Spring Dance concerts, is excited to see what the new club will do this year.

“I think it’s so cool that Robert’s passing down his breakdancing skills to the younger high schoolers,” Laymon said.

The Breakerz emphasize that anyone can join the club, regardless of dance experience.

“I am not exclusive, I will take anyone and train them as long as they are dedicated, focused, and willing to cooperate to have a fun time learning,” Yu said.

Yu said he is very appreciative for Breakerz, and wants to share his experiences.

“Breakerz has allowed me to become more confident and open minded. Without this club, I wouldn’t be who I am today,” Yu said. “I want to carry on the tradition by teaching these kids the basic foundations so when I graduate they can continue the legacy started in 2005.”

As for keeping up with traditions, the new Breakerz plan to perform at the homecoming rally this October.
