Site Council developes goals for school year

The Piedmont Site Council, a group of PHS students, teachers, administrators, and parents that focuses on improving school climate, announced its goals for the upcoming year.

Senior Eli Nash, one of three students on the Site Council, said, “We have three goals, but we have not really made our goals concrete yet.”

Nash said that they are in the process of developing common core and are considering introducing technological reform.

On technological developement, math teacher Doyle O’Regan said, “I think we need to be careful about jumping on the bandwagon.”

O’Regan, opposed to the possibility of introducing chromebooks into everyday classes, said that the main reason for his hesitation in agreeing with technological reform is that he feels that the school needs to be more financially responsible and efficient.

“I’m concerned about us taking on three goals a year due to the time constraint,” O’Regan said.

English teacher Debora Hill, another member of the School Site Council, said that in addition to the common core, the council is working on alleviating student stress and improving the sense of community at the school.

“We are aiming to make the school a happier, healthier learning environment,” Hill said.

In an attempt to address the pressing issue of stress, the Site Council is exploring ways to help students cope with school stress. Specifically, the council is considering adjusting the bell schedule to create more flexibility for students.

It is also evaluating resources like tutorial, asking whether it is effective and whether students use it or not.

“We aren’t making decisions yet. We are exploring things that we can do with the school day and rotation schedule to help to make it a healthier and happier place for students and teachers,” Hill said.

The site council will also meet to discuss ideas for service learning in the coming months.
