Libertarian club starts fresh

libertarian 1 blackwhiteFormerly known as the Young Republican’s club, the Students for Liberty club primarily consists of students who consider themselves libertarians.

Senior Peter Lally, president of Students for Liberty, felt a change from republican to libertarian was necessary for the group to expand

“I later changed the name to Students for Liberty because myself, the VPs, and most club members were libertarians,” Lally said. “Just by changing the name we increased membership by 20 people.”

According to lp.org, the Libertarian Party’s official website, some of the main goals of the party are to minimize the central government while increasing the rights and freedoms of the individual citizens of the country.

Lally feels that a club mainly based on libertarian ideals will be more effective and be a better fit for the students.

“I think that the Libertarian party is the future of the Republican Party,” Lally said. “Just look at the number of young people at Ron Paul’s speeches. I switched because I felt it was more fitting to the views of the members of the old Young Republicans club.”

The Libertarian Party’s objectives include removing the government’s involvement in sensitive social issues, such as abortion and sexual orientation. It also has controversial beliefs regarding drug use, including decriminalizing illegal drugs, according to lp.org.

Junior Alexander Magganas, one of two vice presidents of the club, is in charge of public outreach.

“My duties as vice president include organizing events and getting information out to the student body,” Magganas said. “This information can help students realize they are likely libertarian, even if they did not know.”

Magganas believes that the Libertarian Party is effective because it caters to beliefs of both the Democratic and Republican Parties, helping voters identify with a party that fits their ideals, which would decrease partisans in the voting population.

The students in the Students for Liberty club are invested in changing the future of politics by spreading Libertarian ideals. With each meeting, these students hope to help stimulate political growth within the school.
