photo-5Students traveled to a winter wonderland at the annual Winter Ball dance on Feb. 1.

The event was held at the Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland. The evening began with dinner, followed by dancing and dessert, as well as a photo booth for students to take pictures.

ASB spend two months planning the event, choosing a venue, caterers, security, chaperones, photographers, and organizing everything into place.

“The most important part is the venue and everything else sort of falls into place afterwards,” senior Marie St. Claire said.

Junior Derek Cheung said that he thought ASB did a good job organizing Winter Ball.

“It was a good night overall,” Cheung said. “I had a great time with friends and the music was pretty good.”

St. Claire helped plan the dance and said that she was happy with how it all turned out.

“I really enjoyed planning it,” St. Claire said. “I think people really enjoyed it, at least more so than previous years so that made it a lot more enjoyable as well.”

Junior Abby Hansen said that she had a good time at Winter Ball.

“I liked it,” Hansen said. “[I thought] it was a good venue.”

Sophomore Chris Machle said that he enjoyed Winter Ball as well.

“I thought it was fun,” Machle said. “The venue was very nice, the food was alright, and I had a good time with [my date].”

Senior Leslie Zhang said that this was her first year attending Winter Ball.

“I found it pretty underwhelming, but then again I’m not crazy about dancing and getting dressed up and ball culture,” Zhang said. “But since I was on ASB last year I know how stressful putting Winter Ball together is, so I appreciate their efforts.”

After dinner, students were directed upstairs to the dance floor and dessert table. However, the night was briefly interrupted by a fire alarm that went off as students began to move upstairs. The alarm was quickly turned off and students were directed back inside.

Hansen said that she was trying to find the powder room when the alarm went off.

“It was one of those things like ‘oh this would happen,’” Hansen said.

Despite the fire drill, Hansen said that she thinks students should go to Winter Ball.

“It’s so much fun seeing everyone get dressed up and look nice together,” Hansen said. “It’s so different from the usual.”

Machle also said that he thinks students to attend Winter Ball.

“[Students] should go because the experience as a whole is relatively different and exciting,” Machle said.
