Spring Dance ousted after last years low turnout

This March, there will be no hanging of luminous ornaments, no up and coming artists to perform on stage, and no photo booth for students to pose in their outfits of the nightly theme. ASB will not host a spring dance.

“It was obvious that students were not enjoying it,” Senior class president senior Marie St. Claire said. “So why should we have another one?”

According to St. Claire, the decision to cut the dance came last year, after a very low turnout to last years Spring dance, which featured the popular Bay Area rock band the Phenomenauts. In 2012, G-Eazy took the stage in front of a healthily large student crowd.

“It’s just been getting smaller and smaller every year,” St. Claire said. “So it’s just been a waste of money for ASB to have dances.”

The turnout hit rock bottom last year, as only about 30 people were in attendance to dance and watch the Phenomenauts perform.

“Last year it just wasn’t very popular,” Sophomore Audrey Meyersieck said, who went last year with some of her friends.

The big change comes for the first time in many years, as St. Claire said ASB does not remember the last time a dance was not held during the Spring, which had become a part of PHS culture.

However, even as the gym may be empty and silent during the last week of March, ASB has plans to spruce up other areas of student life around campus.

“We’ve been thinking about potentially having a charity drive, or going on a trip somewhere as a school,” St. Claire said. “We’re definitely trying to think of a fun event that can replace the dance.”

Although discussion of cutting the Spring Dance was broached last year, the formal decision was made this year, leaving many students who already paid for tickets during online registration with worthless deposits.

However, ASB is aware of this, and according to St. Claire, will reimburse students who have paid for Spring Dance tickets through a possible on campus event.

“We need to do something so those students get rewarded in some way, like an on campus food truck one day,” St. Claire said.

In addition, it is not just ASB that has ideas. Sophomore Maeve Sullivan said other events would also be fun for students.

“A night rally would be really cool,” Sullivan said.

While ASB is still in the midst of figuring out how to move forward, the one thing that is certain is that students will not fill the gym this Spring, and possibly many more years to follow.
