Board to take next step in Alan Harvey Theatre renovation

Piedmont’s Unified School Board of Education passed a resolution on January 22 to promote placing a bond initiative in the June 2014 ballot for the Alan Harvey Theater renovations, according to the Board of Education’s webpage.

The District will be presenting a bond measure to voters in June to raise funds to allow the Alan Harvey theater to meet the current requirements and codes of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), modernize building systems, and create a new accessible classroom.

Senior Connor Christiansen, a student in Acting 3-4, said, “I think that the Alan Harvey theater renovations should be carried out because the theater is in very bad shape. Not only does it not look very nice and distracts people from coming from the productions, but also all the acting classes do not have enough sufficient classroom space”.

The total budget for the proposed renovation of the Alan Harvey Theater is $14.5 million. This will be funded with private donations, District modernization funds, and a Proposition 39 General Obligation School Board. So far, over $500,000 has been donated.

“If the bond measure is not approved, the back up plan will probably be to do some repairs to the roof and some of the heating ventilation work but it will not correct the accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act, making it not legally compliant,” Board of Education president Rick Raushenbush, said.
