Huneke takes the reigns over Goen’s classes

History teacher Greta Huneke has taken over the reigns for history teacher Courtney Goen’s Modern World History and US History classes.

Huneke has been a teacher since 1994 and has worked at three different schools in the Bay Area, including. She said that she has been working in the Piedmont School District for five weeks.

“I am really happy to be here and I like the school,” Huneke said.

She will be teaching at PHS for the rest of the school year.

Huneke said that she had positive first impressions of the school. Although she had been on the campus before this is her first time working with high school students.

“During my interview I got in a nice chat with a student in the front office” she said.

Huneke said that she has taught at several different schools and compared to those, the students at PHS are the most engaged.

“What I like about teaching [history] is bringing it to life, through primary sources and simulations,” Huneke said.

The adjustment is not just for students, but for Huneke as well. Huneke said that she has never taught history thematically like Goen does, she has always taught it chronologically. She said that the different way of teaching history is interesting, and enjoys it.

Huneke said that she teaching history as a story, along side with lessons that can be learned.

“There can be characters and it can be presented as a story,” she said.

Junior Connick Shields, who is in Huneke’s US history class, said that class is not very different from Goen’s. There have only been minor changes about how homework reading is done.

“When we first started out there was too much reading for homework, but we have evened out now,” Shields said.

Sophomore Chris Machle, who is in Huneke’s Modern World History class, also said that his class has not changed very much since Goen’s leave of absence.

“The homework is the same, just different note taking,” Machle said.

Huneke said that there will not be any drastic changes to her history classes. She said that she will retain the same grading policies as Goen and hopes that student flow through any minor changes.

Shields said that students and Huneke have adjusted well.
