Neknominations flirt with injury

“You have 24 hours boys, good luck!”

The new social media phenomenon Neknomination is sweeping across the world, and is bringing fatalities with it. The deadly game involves friends, typically males in college, nominating each other to consume a gut wrenching concoction 24 hours after they are nominated.

Neknomination began in England and Ireland when a man posted a video of himself drinking a pint of beer and proceeded to nominate three of his friends to either do the same or top his feat.

Some participants have taken their Neknominations to dangerous levels. According to Urban Myth, a man drank two pints of gin which resulted in his death. Five other deaths have been confirmed according to CNN, along with a nine-year-old girl that has been hospitalized in the UK after attempting to copy the deadly stint.

From a global to local level, Neknomination videos going viral on social media sites such as Facebook, as many PHS grads are being nominated by their friends in the college setting.

For many college students, the allure of Neknominations comes from the daring challenges.

A Neknomination participant said, “Getting nominated was really fun, my friends and I established a pretty good competition debating over who had the best nomination video. Seeing some really crazy ones gives me a good laugh.”

While many participants are not willing to do a feat that would harm them, the risk of alcohol poisoning is prevalent, especially in drinks with deadly concoctions.

Many of the nomination videos on Facebook typically contain the participant “shotgunning” a beer or chugging the beer in a short time frame. Some Youtubers have pushed the limits by mixing alcoholic beverages with items such as raw eggs, hair, and protein powders, which result in large amounts of vomiting.

Another anonymous participant said, “We make sure that when we do our videos we aren’t making concoctions that could be physically unhealthy or possibly induce alcohol poisoning on the nominated participant. It’s all fun and games.”

Junior Kieran Baack said as long as the videos are not harming the person drinking they are a fine way to have fun with your friends.

“Although they promote alcohol use which is bad for you, some of the videos have a comedic aspect to them, whereas others are just dangerous,” Baack said.

One participant said that they do their Neknominations for fun and are always careful with the beverages they create.

“We realize the danger that doing Neknominations can have on a person and we try and stay far away from those as possible while still enjoying the game,” a Neknomination participant said.
