Soap club honors former teacher Eileen Rohmer

In honor of former science teacher Eileen Rohmer, who passed away, the soap club was created to remember her time at PHS.

The soap club meets every Wednesday and sells the soap they have created on Fridays.

The money raised will be given to the senior who receives the Science award, now known as the Eileen Rohmer Science award.

Tom Huffaker, science teacher and creator of the soap club, said he wanted to do a fun, on-going activity in her memory.

“I’ve always wanted to learn how to make soap, so I thought maybe we could all do this together to raise some funds for an award,” Huffaker said.

Senior Henry Taylor said he joined the soap club because he loves science and had Ms. Rohmer as a teacher his sophomore year.

“The best part is when people really take an interest in the soap we’re selling because it’s satisfying to know you’ve created something of value, and its one way to remember Ms. Rohmer,” Taylor said.

Junior Marissa Glick said she joined because making soap from scratch really interested her.

“Mr. Huffaker has really taught us a lot about chemistry involved in the soap making process,” Glick said.

Glick said she also enjoys having fun with her friends when they meet every Wednesday at lunch.

“We have a very solid group that has been reliable which makes things a lot easier and more fun,” Glick said.

Huffaker said he hopes the student who receives the award will donate at least half of the money to charity.

“We didn’t want to make it a big monetary thing, we wanted it to be more of an honorary thing,” Huffaker said.

The soap club is currently working on getting the word out about the club’s activities by selling at multiple places including PHS on Fridays, Mulberry’s on Saturdays and Atomic Garden on College Avenue.
