Swipe swipe, pause…swipe, pause…swipe swipe pause.
This simple yet addictive activity has manifested itself into many students smartphones through the form of 2048, the new hot app in which players try to combine tiles that are multiples of 2 into a 2048 tile to win the game.
Developed by Ketchapp, the game initially appears simple to many first-time users. Swipe like tiles together to combine them into a larger product to get bigger tiles. However, there is much more complexity than one might think.
Despite these difficulties, most players are able to get through the hurdles of being a novice player, and eventually beat the game, creating a 2048 tile. At this point, the screen flashes yellow and notifies the player of his or her win. However, for experienced players like junior Jackson Roberts, the game doesn’t just end there.
“You see, you don’t just beat 2048, because as soon as you beat it, there’s another goal,” Roberts said.
The goal Roberts is talking about is 4096, which is double 2048. In order to create a 4096 tile, one must create yet another 2048 tile and combine it with the preexisting one. While this sounds difficult, players like Roberts have achieved this and beyond.
“It never really stops, and I’m not just going to see a goal and not go for it,” Roberts said, who has a high score of 56,072.
Mathematically, 217, a 131,072 tile, would be the maximum a player could get in a single game, and would net them approximately 2,097,152 points.
While this may sound enticing, most players are content with just the 2048 tile, and some even throw in the towel at that point.
