New Mobile App Making Club launched

The Mobile App Making Club recently launched, giving students interested in computer science another option.

Computers teacher Nathan Mattix said that the Mobile App Making Club started more or less because of the need for more computer classes like Mobile Apps. However, Mattix said it’s an extremely slow process to add a new class but a fast process to start a club.

Mattix said that some of the students and parents that were interested in having a mobile apps class said that in the mean time they would do a club so those who wanted to learn could still learn.

“We’re a little slow getting off the ground because the software that is needed for the club has not been installed yet but we are getting there,” Mattix said.

Mattix said that there are about a dozen kids involved in the club so far but thinks that there will be more interest in the club once the organizational and installation issues are gone. The students in the club will be making games that they can play on their cell phones.

“There are students at PHS that take AP computers as sophomores because they are extremely interested in computer science but have no where to go their junior and senior year. This problem is growing rapidly because more and more students are taking AP,” Mattix said.

Mattix said there are a certain segment of students that are looking for somewhere to go and with the mobile app making club they are able to progress.

Junior Tiffany Zhou said that the first few Mobile App Making meetings have been very exciting, especially because she’s gotten to see how everything is getting started.

Zhou said that the apps they make will be exposed to the outer world through attending Piedmont Makers Fair, releasing app demos on YouTube, and publishing them to the App Store.
