Five student athletes officially committed to play collegiate sports on May 15 in the Binks Rawling Gym.
Students included volleyball player Kathlyn Craigie, baseball player Spencer Gutterman, football player Spencer Kim, cross country runner Sophie MacCracken, and lacrosse player Drummond Thompson.
Craigie will be playing for Denison University, Gutterman for Lewis and Clark College, Kim for Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MacCracken for Hobart and William Smith College, and Thompson for Bard College.
The ceremony began by principal Brent Daniels congratulating the athletes on both their academic and athletic success’ while at Piedmont.
Athletic Director Megan Hernandez also recognized the athletes on their achievements while being student athletes at Piedmont. Hernandez said “It’s very important to have ceremonies to honor our student athletes who will continue playing their sport after high school at the collegiate level.”
Freshman Jacob Watson was in attendance to show his support for Kim, who was the starting quarterback for the Highlander’s football team this year.
Watson said, “ I wanted to show support for Spencer who really welcomed all the new Freshman onto the team and really was cool with any of the players regardless of their grade.”
Thompson who has been a stellar goalie for the Highlander Lacrosse program said he worked on getting recruited during the summer.
Thomson said, “I sent out a bunch of emails to different schools and Bard was the most enthusiastic.”
Thompson said that Bard has an up and coming program which would give him the opportunity to compete for the starting goalie position in his freshman year there.
