This year’s newly introduced Spanish 3 In Action class was a success, Spanish teacher Joanne Guillen-Donohoe said.
According to the PHS planning guide, this alternate Spanish III course focuses on real life communicative scenarios, practical vocabulary, essential grammar skills and cultural exploration. The course is not designed to prepare students for further advancement in Spanish at PHS (level IV and AP).
Guillen-Donohoe said spanish teacher Christelle Hutin-Lee and her both saw a need for a different level III class.
“We wanted a course that would serve students who were interested in the language itself as well as the culture,” Guillen-Donohoe said.
Guillen-Donohoe said that the course is all about expression.
“Students are expressing themselves orally and in other various ways,” Guillen Donohoe said. “Its also a course where students have a lot of freedom in terms of what they get out of the course, and they have a lot of freedom with the projects.”
Junior Monica Woolcott said that her favorite part of the class is the projects and videos they make.
“I chose to take this course instead of regular Spanish III because it seemed like a better fit for me,” Woolcott said. “I’ve never really been good at the speaking aspect of Spanish, so I thought this class might focus more on other things that are easier for me.”
Junior Lachlan Halverson said that he would recommend taking this course to the current Spanish II students for next year.
“It was an easier learning process and the pace was slower,” Halverson said.
Halverson said he liked the class because of the different techniques of learning.
“It teaches you how to use communication skills and focuses on different aspects than the Spanish III class,” Halverson said.
Guillen-Donohoe said that she is excited for next year because there will be two Spanish 3 In Action classes.
