A student blows gently on a wand covered in soapy solution, creating a stream of bubbles. The bubbles float from to amphitheater to the rest of the quad as students gleefully chase and pop them.
Sophomore Mika Lee created The Order of the Bubble club to liven students’ spirits on gloomy Mondays.
“Mondays are kind of sad so I thought that blowing bubbles on a sad day would make people happier,” Lee said. “It’s really a poppin’ scene.”
Sophomore Zoë Kalbag agrees that the club helps lighten the mood.
“It’s a nice break from the stress of the school day,” Kalbag said.
Substitute teacher Billy Allen appreciates the bubbles on campus.
“I think [the bubble club is] awesome,” Allen said. “It’s uplifting, absolutely.”
Freshman Kailee Lin said that Lee’s idea to bring bubbles to school makes her happy.
“I think it’s a really good idea,” Lin said.
Allen said that bubbles are a metaphor for life.
“They remind me of the beauty and the fragility of life,” Allen said.
To advertise for The Order of the Bubble, Lee distributed hand-drawn stickers at Club Day last fall.
“It’s because we wanted people to stick around,” Lee said.
Lee said that she is impressed by the popularity of the club.
“I was really blown away by the number of people who joined me,” Lee said. “It just gets me bubbling over with excitement.”
Lee’s interest in bubbles began when she was very young.
“I like blowing bubbles because it accentuates my bubbly personality,” Lee said. “It makes me feel juiced.”
Similarly, club participants have enjoyed bubbles since they were young.
“I’ve always liked bubbles and it’s something I haven’t done in a long time,” Lin said. “You forget how much fun it is.”
Lee said that students interested in joining The Order of the Bubble should find her during lunch on Mondays.
“Come to the amphitheater on Mondays,” Lee said. “You know you wand to.”
