Select actors from the Piedmont High School Advanced Acting class are proud to present Doubt by John Patrick Shanley, a fast-paced theological thriller, as a one-night-only independent production on Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alan Harvey Theater.
A Pulitzer Prize-winning piece, Doubt dramatizes the series of accusations between Father Flynn and Sister Aloysius, two workers at a Catholic school in the 1950’s. Father Flynn has been accused by coworker Sister Aloysius for something he did – or did not – do. The audience is caught between two volatile forces and must decide which presents the most “doubt.” Considered “a parable,” Doubt captures the difficulty in proving innocence in a he-said-she-said battle.
Doubt is directed by senior Saam Jalinous and senior Grace Sanford. Director senior Saam Jalinous said that there is a “warring battle of morality” and the play “test[s] the audience.”
The cast of Doubt includes PHS Advanced Acting senior Eliza Lucas as Sister Aloysius, senior Laurel Rosenbaum as Sister James and junior Jakob Armstrong as Father Flynn.
Sanford said that the cast has great chemistry and the biggest reward of the process has been watching them [the cast] succeed.
Theater teacher Kim Taylor says that watching students tackle a big project like the full production of a play is inspiring. “It allows the students to take ownership of their learning,”she said.
Tickets will be available at the door. Recommended donation is $5 for adults and $2 for students. The show will run for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with no intermission
Doubt is rated PG-13 for mature content.
