Dynamic duos take on PHS

After 17 years of being together, twin seniors Libby and Will Corvin will find themselves one-thousand miles apart this fall. Libby will attend Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, while her brother attends Washington University in St. Louis.

“Next year will be hard, but I’m confident we will stay in touch and still be very close,” Libby said.

Sophomores Noelle and Sofia Lautt have been apart for almost eight months since Sofia left to study abroad in Spain.

“Having Sofia in Spain doesn’t feel that weird or different,” Noelle said.

Noelle said that although Sofia is her twin, they are very different from each other. She said that each twin has her own strengths and weaknesses which sets her apart from the other.

“Because we are fraternal, a lot of people don’t even realize that we are twins until we tell them,” Noelle said.

Unlike the Lautt sisters, identical twin juniors Max and Charlie Schugart are often confused for one another.

“People who try can tell us apart after a couple encounters,” Max said. “People who don’t try can know me for 10 years and still confuse me for my brother.”

Charlie said that during their freshman year, he and Max were able to switch places in their math classes virtually unnoticed.

“I wore a jacket that had Max’s name on it so everyone thought I was him,” Charlie said. “The only person who knew it wasn’t me was Mr. Marthinsen.”

“Having my brother is like having an extension of myself,” Max said.

Charlie said that although there are benefits to having a twin, he and Max are often compared to each other.

“I feel like it can get pretty competitive and that just makes things awkward,” Charlie said.

Noelle said that she and her sister are also compared to each other.

“It’s stressful when people compare us because we are completely different people,” Noelle said.

Charlie said that although they compete with each other, having a twin has pushed him to be the best he can be.

“There are always sibling rivalries, especially between twins,” Charlie said.

Libby said that even though having a twin can be challenging, having Will has improved both her social and academic lives.

“I like having a built-in friend,” Libby said. “It is also convenient to have [Will] in the same classes to help me remember what the homework is and help me if I need it.”

Charlie said that having Max means that he will never be alone. Max said that because he has Charlie, he will always have a friend and will never have to feel isolated.

“As twins we spend more time together and get each other,” Charlie said.

Libby said that although she and Will are close, they did not bond until the summer before junior year.

“We went to camp as counselors-in-training and bonded over our experiences,” Libby said.

Max said that he and Charlie have always been close and shared everything.

“Everyone should have a twin,” Max said.  “It’s like having a really good best friend.”
