The Varsity Women’s Soccer team defeated the Hayward High School team with an shutout of 8-0 on Friday.
Starters of the game included seniors Mara Blumenstein, Claire Lim, and goalie Kesy Platt, juniors Erin Greening, Alex Darwish, and Lindsey Vaughn. Sophomores who started were Grace Sanford, Daria Mohazab, Rebecca Harris, and Assara Price, along with freshman Leah Kochendoerfer.
The Highlanders played a quick first half with three goals and one assist from junior Erin Greening and another goal from freshman Leah Kochendoerfer. Strong defensive clears from senior Mara Blumenstein and junior Lindsay Vaughn kept the ball on the offensive side, ending the half at 3-0 for the Highlanders.
The second half was also victorious with an assist from sophomore Rebecca Harris, a second goal from Greening, a goal from sophomore Grace Sanford, a header from Vaughn, and a successful penalty kick from senior Claire Lim. Goalie senior Kesy Platt also kept the team in check with numerous saves. The game ended at a triumphant 8-0 win for the Highlanders.
Greening was the Highlanders leading scorer, scoring five goals this game, but has consistently showed intensity.
“This game was easier than others because we were able to put into action some of the plays that we worked on in practice,” Greening said.
The freshman have really improved and know where to be on the field said Vaughn’s mother, Carole Porter.
“They have a better defensive line that’s able to kick the ball up and give the forwards some opportunities to get the ball. They’ve strengthened,” Porter said.
Sullivan, who made varsity as a freshman, said she enjoys being an underclassmen on a predominantly upperclassmen team.
“It’s good because you make upperclassman friends, but it’s definitely intimidating,” she said.
