From March 18 to March 28 PHS will host the annual March Madness tournament for PHS basketball players and students to play for fun and competition.
Inspired by the national college basketball tournament, Piedmont’s own March Madness is a four on four basketball tournament, with one sub per team, and one Varsity basketball player allowed per team.
“I’m really passionate about [college basketball] March Madness, so [ASB] wants to bring something like that to Piedmont”, junior Jack Meyjes said. Meyes is organizing the event alongside ASB.
All students are able to participate and show off their skills.
“Everyone in the school gets to play each other, so it’s really fun to compete against people that maybe don’t play for the school, but are pretty good,” sophomore Will Hinman said.
This year will be highly competitive, with many teams competing. Meyjes and Hinman are a part of their own teams.
“Last year my team lost to the team that ended up winning, so this year I think we really have a chance to win it all,” Hinman said.
Hinman said he hopes to play a key role in his team’s path to victory, playing second fiddle to Varsity sophomore Beach Lorin.
“We have two good scorers, and two [taller players], so I will be trying to get a lot of points on the board.”
Meyjes said he is excited about his team, even though they look slightly different this year. “I’m feeling pretty confident as the reigning champion.”
Varsity basketball player junior Dillon Casey and other former high school basketball players will join Meyjes on his team
“This year’s tournament has a lot of good teams, I’m excited to see how things go,” Meyjes said.
Varsity basketball player junior PJ Brayer headlines another team with many high school basketball players,, including sophomores Jed Gilbert and Ruben Cohen, who both played for the Junior Varsity basketball team this year. Both Cohen and Gilbert competed in the March Madness tournament last year.
“I had a great time competing last year, I think my team has a good chance of winning,” Cohen said.
