Piedmont’s boys varsity soccer(11-9-4) crushed the Williams Junior-Senior High School Yellowjackets(14-1-2) with a 4-1 victory for the CIF championship.
After Piedmont’s upsetting defeat against Roseland University Prep during the NCS Division IV championship, the Highlanders received a second chance at success by qualifying for the Division V NorCal CIF.
“To execute the way we did at this point in the season from where we started to where we ended, it was always gonna be the new goal of making NCS,” head coach Ben Russell said. “We didn’t quite make it in the final, but to go into the CIF regional finals is even better. I’m very proud of them.”
Piedmont did not come to lose against Williams, with starting captain striker senior Gianluca Bini scoring the game’s first goal off a penalty kick 25 minutes into the first half.
“From seniors to freshmen, we all did a phenomenal job,” Bini said.
The boys kept their momentum going with a hat trick by Bini, scoring two more goals within the last two minutes of the first half, upping the score to 3-0.
“I couldn’t believe it. That’s a dream come true in the final, getting the hat trick,” Bini said.
Bini said that the other team was full of great people and that he respects them for making it to the championship in comparison to the NCS championship game’s violent and intense atmosphere.
The second half began slower, starting with left wing senior Nikolas Markopoulos receiving a yellow card within the first minute.
After a long battle of back-and-forth shot attempts between the teams, the Yellowjackets scored their first goal with two minutes left in the second half.
Before the end of the match, starting center attacking midfielder senior Bosco Lorin scored the last goal of the game, making the final score 4-1.
“We really stepped up to the occasion. Following our last loss in the NCS finals, we came out hard with 100% energy,” Lorin said. “We just balled out. It’s a great way to go out.”
