Now in its second year at Piedmont High School, ASB’s New Student Support Committee is continuing to work towards creating a more welcoming environment for new students.
The committee started in the fall of 2024 and was originally led by juniors Heiko Sexton-Boer and Kate Tong, and supervised by ASB co-president senior Sydney Olson. The goal of the committee is to make every new student feel welcome in the Piedmont community.
Last year, one way in which the committee aimed to meet this goal was by offering monthly pizza lunches for the new students in science teacher Shelley Seto’s classroom. Around 30 students in total attended throughout the year.
“I liked going because I felt welcomed and not alone,” sophomore Favianna Brown said.
This year, the committee will consist of ASB members Orion Sachs, Leela Sivakumar, Henry Pfister, and Dalia Strub. They are planning to continue the monthly lunches as well as adding new events.
“Our ultimate goal is to just get everybody united at Piedmont,” Sachs said.
Since the start of the school year, the committee has held one lunch that included icebreakers and a presentation introducing ASB and their role on campus.
“It just gives the students a place to go and it’s super fun,” Olson said.
The committee also aims to strengthen school spirit by encouraging new students to attend sporting events, especially football games. To do this, members will host tables and give out prizes at the games for the new students. They are also planning to align their monthly lunches with home football games.
Sachs said the events will create a stronger bond between the new students and the community.
