Students, parents, and other community members across Piedmont will take part in Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2025 to commemorate the civil rights activist who helped integrate American Schools. Participants will meet at Piedmont Park and walk to school while engaging in discussions about racism and bullying.
The event, which is centered around the actions of six year old Ruby Bridges as she faced an angry mob to attend an all-white school in 1960, serves as an annual reminder of the civil rights movement.
“Even though it was so long ago, it’s important to remember her story,” junior Nico Psathas said. “It was an important event in our country’s history as a transition from a segregated era.”
PHS and MHS Affinity Mentors will be present to welcome community members.
“They welcome people, they give out swag, and do chalk art with little kids,” said Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, Jean Takazawa. “They just try to make sure that everyone feels welcome.”
The high school mentors will also lead a pledge for kindness, asking attendees to stand up against racism and bullying in their community. Takazawa said the goal is to end discrimination and be thoughtful to each other.
The walking will begin at 8:15, shortly after the pledge with participants proceeding to their own schools. “I will definitely go,” Junior Avedis Gourjian said. “Ruby Bridges is really brave for going to an all-white school and fighting segregation.”
Gourjian said the walk was educational and changed his perspective by making history feel more relevant.
